Beltone Offers New Extensions to its Award-Winning Beltone True™ Product Line-Up

“Game-Changing” Products Add Greater Options and Advantages to Company's 2.4 GHz Wireless Line-Up
CHICAGO, February, 2011 – Beltone has announced two new productextensions to its award-winning Beltone True™ line-up. The first is the Beltone True MIC – the industry's only wireless microphone-in-concha custom instrument. The second is the Beltone True Flex BTE – the first Flex BTE instrument that can be converted to normal power, high-power and open configurations. Both are part of the Beltone True product line, a new generation of virtually invisible hearing instruments that wirelessly receive sound directly from TV, cell/home phone, stereo, PC and iPod via a 2.4 GHz signal.
“With a powerful integrated circuit specially designed for audio applications, these product extensions are real “game-changers” and represent a breakthrough in hearing for demanding listening situations,” says Dr. John Cariola, Director of Product Management. “In addition, the new MIC and Flex BTE will continue to offer the Beltone True's industry-leading 2.4 GHz wireless technology and the world's smallest receiver-in the-ear.”
Like its predecessor the Beltone Touch™, the Beltone True MIC leverages the ear's anatomy to provide a discreet appearance and excellent instrument performance. It takes advantage of the ear's ability to deliver natural sound quality, directional cues, and wind noise reduction. It's available in all three technology levels (True 17, 9, and 6) and two style options, the 35M (312 battery) and 15M (10a battery). However, only the 35M model offers the option of wireless functionality.
Patients with hearing on the borderline between moderate and severe will benefit from the Flex BTE's range of possibilities. The instrument offers a standard or power solution in both an open or closed configuration and a wide fitting range, which allows it to adapt to the patient's changing hearing loss and amplification needs. In addition, the Beltone True Flex BTE is smaller and more powerful than devices with similar amplification.
The Beltone True recently received the prestigious International CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award, earning top honors in the health and wellness category. The line's innovative features include the following:
  • Direct TV Link – Direct 2.4 GHz wireless connection to a television, stereo or computer allows the listener to comfortably enjoy entertainment with others while also participating in conversation in the room.
  • Direct Phone Link – Accessories give wearers broad sound and program customization, and allow direct connection to a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone. Once the phone rings (also heard through True), the call is transmitted to both ears. A clip attached to the user's clothing acts as the patient's microphone, allowing the cell phone to remain in a handbag or pocket.
  • Solus Pro Fitting Option – The industry's first truly wireless fitting software frees users from the need to use programming cords and fitting “medallions.”
  • HPF80 NanoBlock Protection – An invisible, highly durable protective coating that safeguards sensitive circuitry and delicate components inside and out, protecting the True from moisture, dirt, temperature/humidity fluctuations, earwax and skin oils.
  • Auto-Phone – Automatically turns on when the phone comes near the ear.
  • Feedback Eraser – Automatically eliminates the uncomfortable and embarrassing ringing that feedback can cause in the ear. This feature is tailored to meet the individual's hearing needs, providing the best possible feedback-free hearing and distortion reduction.
  • Spatial Directionality – Helps the wearer prioritize sounds in noisy and/or busy environments using proprietary band-splitting methodology and a unique sound classification system.
  • Speech Spotter Pro – Beltone's newest technology automatically distinguishes between speech and noise, allowing users to more easily follow conversations in noisy places such as restaurants.

Studies Link Hearing Loss to the Development of Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia

Research Shows that Hearing Evaluations Are First Line of Defense

CHICAGO, January, 2012 – www.beltone.com – A study published in the Archives of Neurology* found that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease and dementia than those with normal hearing. The study also concluded that hearing loss can intensify the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and dementia once they are already present.
Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range of conditions including impaired memory, the inability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, and increased risk to personal safety. Further, hearing loss is associated with irritability, anger, fatigue, tension, and depression. Because these symptoms are similar to those present with Alzheimer's disease, a hearing screening is essential to determine the root cause.

By Treating Hearing Loss, Hearing Aids Help Reduce Multiple
Alzheimer's Symptoms

In response to these findings, further studies found that interventions such ashearing aids can delay, or even prevent, dementia and Alzheimer's by improving patients' hearing. Further, treating hearing loss with hearing aids can help reduce multiple Alzheimer's symptoms. Treating hearing loss allows the brain continued stimulation, which helps keep it active — enabling people to stay alert.
“Most hearing loss can be managed with hearing aids,” said Sergei Kochkin, Executive Director of the Better Hearing Institute. “By addressing hearing loss, we can help improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer's so they can live as fully as possible. These individuals, as well as their families and caregivers, face many challenges. Untreated hearing loss shouldn't have to be one of them.”
Although the reason for the link between hearing loss and Alzheimer's disease is unknown, investigators suggest that the strain of decoding sounds over the years may overwhelm the brains of people with hearing loss, leaving them more vulnerable to dementia. They also speculate that hearing loss could lead to dementia by making individuals more socially isolated, a known risk factor for dementia and other cognitive disorders.

Your Hearing Health

Good hearing lets you savor life. When it's easy to hear, it's easy to stay involved. Sharing laughter with loved ones, excelling on the job, remaining independent—good hearing is the key.
Did you know that by age 55, one in four adults has hearing loss? And, by age 65, almost one in three has hearing loss. If you suspect you have a hearing loss, ignoring or neglecting it can make it worse. But, treating a hearing loss with hearing aids can dramatically slow its progression—helping you preserve good hearing for a lifetime!

Good Hearing Can Be Yours Again

Hearing loss can develop over time or suddenly. It can be caused by earwax, illness, or age. It can affect different people in different ways. The more you learn about the ins-and-outs of hearing loss, the more empowered you become.
Maintaining healthy hearing starts with a baseline hearing screening at Beltone. Just as you schedule annual physicals and dental exams, it's essential to schedule a hearing test every year. Knowing where you stand will help you hear your very best, at any age. To find a Beltone location near you enter your Zip Code in the Beltone locator at the top of this page.
Common noises and their respective dB levels

Hearing Conservation: Preventing Hearing Loss

Extremely loud noises can cause permanent damage to the tiny hair cells inside the cochlea. Even moderately loud noise over a period of time can be damaging. But just how loud is loud? Studies show that prolonged exposure to sounds at, or above, 90dB can damage hearing. The chart above graphically illustrates some common noises and their respective dB levels.
Protect your hearing and wear earplugs whenever your surroundings are so loud, you must raise your voice to be heard. It doesn't matter what the source of the loud sounds is–music, machinery, conversation—or other noisy environments.

Hearing Loss Support Groups

As we age, hearing loss can occur. In fact, advancing age is the most common cause of hearing loss. The realization that our hearing is diminishing brings with it many emotions. Often, we experience denial, and refuse to accept reality. We may feel isolated, and wonder if we are the only ones struggling to hear. We may feel upset because our spouse, friends and relatives act frustrated or angered by having to raise their voices and constantly repeat themselves. At work, missing critical words when conversing with bosses and colleagues can lead to embarrassment and worry.
Surprisingly, support for the psychological effects of hearing loss isn't easy to find. Primary physicians generally don't test for hearing loss, much less advise on what to expect. Friends and relatives often can't “relate,” and support on the job is rare.
But, there is encouragement and help out there. Whether you're a child, teen or adult living with hearing loss, or you're the parent or child of a hearing impaired person, support groups can be of tremendous help.
What Does a Hearing Loss Support Group Look Like?
A support group can be started by a person with hearing loss, or by someone, such as a family member, who is affected by hearing loss. In some cases, support groups are established by nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, or experts in the field of hearing care.
A hearing loss support group can take a variety of forms, including in-person group meetings, or internet forums and “chats.” Online support groups offer friendship, support and networking opportunities for people who can't attend or find local programs. Some online groups have more than 1000 members!
Generally speaking, support group members are hearing impaired and attend regular meetings on a volunteer basis. A professional facilitator—such as a hearing care professional or a psychologist—may lead the group, or, one or more members may take the helm. Some groups take an educational approach and feature speakers, panels and programs. Examples of topics may include hearing aid technology, cochlear implants, and financing options for hearing devices.
Other support groups offer emotional support, coping skills and an open forum to share both positive and negative experiences pertaining to hearing loss. Many members who are wearing hearing aids for the first time enjoy interacting with other hearing aid wearers and learning how to get the most from their hearing instruments. Many family members exchange ways to support their loved ones who have hearing loss. And, many support groups offer lip reading lessons. Lip reading especially benefits people with profound hearing loss.
Support groups can also steer you toward the right kind of hearing care professional for your particular case—such as hearing care practitioners, audiologists, otolaryngologists, cochlear implant surgeons, speech pathologists, etc.
To find a local hearing loss support group, ask your hearing care specialist, or search the internet for a group in your area. Check out the state chapters available from the Hearing Loss Association of America. The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has chapters in 32 states.
Benefits of participating in a hearing loss support group:
  • Join a community of peers who understand what you're facing
  • Achieve a sense of belonging, pride & control
  • Adjust more quickly & cope more easily with hearing loss
  • Talk openly and freely without fear
  • Reduce depression & anxiety
  • Gain input before making important hearing health decisions
  • Learn about new hearing aid technology and medical solutions
  • Get practical advice about hearing aids
  • Explore a variety of treatment options
  • Get first-hand referrals
  • Compare notes about hearing care professionals
